The
PhD Plus portable gas detector monitors up to four atmospheric
hazards simultaneously. The PhD Plus detector measures
oxygen, combustible gas, and up to two additional toxic
gases. The Biosystems' "smart sensor" technology used by
these meters improves instrument performance, and makes
regular maintenance even easier.

PhD Plus options
include your choice of two types of field replaceable snap-in
battery packs. The NiCad pack option comes complete with a fast
charger which allows charging of the battery in or out of the
unit in less than two hours. (Also available as a 12v battery
charger). The Alkaline pack holds a set of three AA disposable
batteries. Either pack provides up to 12 hours of continous operation.
An optional slip-on
"smart" sample pump is powered and electronically monitored directly
by the instrument. PhD Plus detectors are also available in the
form of complete kits which include all the standard accessories
as well as calibration gas, regulator, and waterproof carrying
case.
True
"One Button" operation: All procedures necessary for day to day operation,
including automatic calibration adjustment, are controlled through the
single On/Off "Mode" button.
Smart
sensors: Biosystems' revolutionary new "Smart Sensors" are individually
equipped with their own EEPROM memory chip. Besides storing information
such as type, serial number and alarm settings, the chip also stores calibration
adjustments and sensor-specific temperature compensation curves. Every
time the sensor is calibrated it gets smarter, and accuracy is improved.
Interchangeable
NiCad and disposable alkaline battery packs: PhD Plus batteries are
housed in two types of snap-in battery packs. Either type of snap-in pack
provides up to 12 hours of continuous operation. The NiCad pack can be
recharged while installed in the PhD Plus, or may be removed from the instrument
for separate recharging in the PhD Plus "Fast Charger."
Automatic
calibration adjustment: "One Button Auto Calibration" is available
any time while in normal operation. All you have to do is press the "Mode"
button, attach the adapter, and flow gas to the sensors. All the adjustments
are made automatically.
Small
package; rugged design: The PhD Plus is completely sealed against the
elements. The rugged steel-filled polycarbonate case is designed to minimize
the effects of radio frequency interference.
Automatic
setup: Instrument setup is automatic, just plug in the new sensor.
The PhD Plus reviews all the information stored on the sensor chip, notes
the changes, displays the correct readings, and assigns the proper alarms.
Multi-sensor
capability: One to four sensors:O2, LEL, and up to two toxic
sensors. Choose from substance specific sensors for the detection of CO,
H2S and SO2, or Biosystems'dual purpose "CO Plus"
sensor for the simultaneous measurement of both CO and H2S.
Sample
draw options: Every PhD Plus comes complete with a manual sample draw
kit. The optional continuous sample draw pump draws power directly from
the Phd Plus and operates whenever the instrument is turned on. The PhD
Plus directly monitors the pump for proper operation.
|
Battery
Options:
PhD Plus batteries are housed in two types of interchangeable snap-in battery
packs. Either pack provides up to 12 hours of continuous operation. The
alkaline pack holds a set of 3 AA disposable batteries. The NiCad pack
can be recharged while installed in the PhD Plus or may be removed from
the instrument for separate recharging in the PhD Plus Fast Charger. The
intrinsically safe battery packs are designed so that they may be removed
or replaced even while the instrument is being operated in a hazardous
location. |
PhD
Plus Fast Charger:
When ordered with a NiCad battery pack, the standard accessories include
a PhD Plus Fast Charger which allows charging of the battery either in
or out of the instrument in less than two hours. Built-in LED lights indicate
charging status. When fast-charging is complete the charger automatically
converts to a trickle charge in order to avoid any damage to the battery
pack due to overcharging. |
Sample
Drawing:
Every PhD Plus comes complete
with a manual (squeeze bulb) sample draw kit with 10 feet of sample tubing.
The sample draw adaptor also serves as the calibration adaptor used to
introduce test gas to the sensors.
Continuous
Sample Pump:
An optional slip-on UL®/CSA
Classified sample draw pump is available for situations requiring continuous
hands-free remote sampling. The sample pump draws power directly from the
PhD Plus battery and automatically operates whenever the instrument is
turned on. The PhD Plus microprocessor directly monitors the pump for proper
operation. The pump contains a unique pressure sensor which detects water
or other fluids being sucked into the hose, and immediately shuts off the
pump in order to prevent damage.
Compact
size; rugged design:
The PhD Plus is housed in
a super rugged steel-filled polycarbonate case designed to stand up to
the most demanding environments. The completely sealed water resistant
case is protected against dust and liquid intrusion and has been designed
to minimize the effects of radio frequency interference. Individual LED
alarm lights for each gas being measured and an automatic backlight that
turns on in dim light means that the PhD Plus is always convenient to use;
even in the dark! |

Sophistication
Without Complication
Front
Panel is Easy to See and Read:
Three operating modes make
the PhD Plus easy to use...
Text
Only Mode:
This mode provides a quick indication
that all systems are GO until an alarm is activated. The Text Only mode
makes the PhD Plus the easiest to use instrument on the market, keeping
training requirements to a minimum.
Basic
Mode:
In this mode readings are given
in numbers. "One Button Auto Calibration" can be used anytime the instrument
is operated in the Basic Mode to verify that the instrument is accurate.
Technician
Mode:
This is the mode for advanced
users. In this mode you have access to all advanced functions and displays
as well as "One Button Auto Calibration" adjustment. In normal operation
the display identifies and shows readings for all the gases being measured
at the same time. Simply push the mode button to view Peak Exposures, Short
Term Exposure Levels, and Time Weighted Averages. In the Technician Mode
you can change alarm settings as well as make use of optional setup choices. |
Smart
Sensors Give The PhD Plus a Touch of Genius:
Each Biosystems "Smart Sensor"
is individually equipped with its own memory chip. Besides storing information
such as type, serial number and alarm settings, the chip also stores calibration
adjustments and sensor-specific temperature compensation curves. This information
is read and updated every time the instrument is turned on. Every time
the instrument is calibrated the sensors get smarter, and accuracy is continuously
improved. Choose from substance specific sensors for the detection of CO,
H2S and SO2, or Biosystems' dual purpose "CO Plus"
sensor for the simultaneous measurement of both CO and H2S.
Alarms:
PhD Plus alarms are user
adjustable and may be set anywhere within the range of the sensor. (Factory
settings may be restored at any time by using the "alarm" push-button.)
When an alarm point is exceeded a loud audible alarm sounds, and an individual
bright red LED alarm light for each affected sensor blinks.
Convenient
Kits:
PhD Plus detectors are available
in the form of complete kits.
Confined Space Kits
include a PhD Plus detector with all standard accessories as well as calibration
gas, regulator and waterproof carrying case. |
|
Calibration
is Easy and Automatic:
Biosystems' "One Button"
logic makes calibration a snap. All you have to do is press the "Mode"
button, attach the adaptor, and flow gas to the sensors. All the adjustments
are made automatically.
"One Button Auto Calibration"
is available any time while in normal operation. You start by using the
Mode button to make a fresh air "Auto Zero" adjustment. When the zero adjustment
has been completed the PhD Plus will prompt you to do a "Span Calibration."
Simply press the Mode button,
and flow gas to the sensors.
The PhD Plus will wait for
gas to be applied, show you the current readings, and then (if necessary)
automatically adjust the sensors.
The screen will show the reading
for each sensor as it is adjusted, then let you know when calibration is
complete.
Value Packs include
a two or three sensor "Alkaline" PhD Plus, all standard accessories, 34
or 15 liter cylinder of all-in-one calibration gas, and compact, foam-lined
